Commercial Asbestos Abatement: Why Hire a Specialist?

If you’re a contractor, a business owner, or a homeowner, you are likely already aware of the very detrimental problems asbestos can cause. These treacherous, naturally occurring fibrous minerals can come in many different forms and can create serious health problems. In fact, asbestos is officially classified as a human carcinogen, which is why it’s so dangerous to have in any building – especially if you are doing any tear-down or remodeling. The best and most important time to remove asbestos is when changing the internal structure.

California Laws Regarding Asbestos Abatement

So, why have a specialist involved? In California, a specialist is almost always required to complete an asbestos abatement project because the state upholds such strict regulations for it. First, California asbestos law requires employees and contractors working on asbestos projects greater than 100 square feet with an asbestos concentration above 0.1 percent to register with the Asbestos Contractors’ Registration Organization. Anyone handling asbestos must have certification.

On the actual abatement site itself, all workers must wear respirators and multiple layers of protective clothing. In the removal of friable asbestos, the materials containing must be adequately wetted before removal to limit airborne asbestos fibers, which are dangerous carcinogens. All asbestos-containing materials must also be intact when removed unless deemed impossible by the contractor. Additionally, everyone who handles asbestos must receive thorough training and education beforehand.

Because the laws regarding asbestos abatement in California are so complex, it’s important to hire a trusted, licensed, and experienced professional to handle your asbestos project.
